National coach Walid Regragui commented on the return of Atlas Lions captain Romain Saïss after missing the March camp, restating that he was not called up to allow Regragui to test younger players.

During a press conference on Tuesday to announce the Atlas Lions squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Regragui highlighted his trust in Saiss and his leadership qualities.

The coach also addressed concerns about the readiness of Nayef Aguerd following his injury with West Ham, noting that Aguerd has been working on his physical fitness with the national team’s doctor.

In response to questions about the lack of Botola players in the squad, Regragui said that his selection is based on merit and alignment with his playstyle, using the examples of Rahimi and El Kaabi, who were called up after improving their performance.

The coach made it clear that there will not be a quota for local league players, adding that “if names emerge that deserve to be in the national team, they will be called up.”
