Former FC Barcelona players Gerard Piqué and Leo Messi, along with former president of the Spanish Football Federation Luis Rubiales, were negotiating for three months with UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin to redirect funds from the European organization.

The aim was to compensate for salary cuts experienced by some players in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to leaked audio and text messages of the discussions, reported by Spanish newspaper The Objective.

Leaked documents suggest that in 2020, Ceferin held several video conferences with Messi, Piqué, and Rubiales to devise a plan to redirect funds to assist players affected by the pandemic

Rubiales allegedly suggested to UEFA President Ceferin that 4% of the broadcasting rights for all UEFA matches be restructured so that 50% could be allocated to compensate players.

Additionally, Rubiales allegedly told Messi and Piqué to send signed jerseys to Ceferin “as a token of gratitude.”
