Morocco health workers threaten "unprecedented" action over unmet demands

Hespress ENTuesday 21 May 2024 – 21:51

Health unions in Morocco are warning of “unprecedented” measures if the government doesn’t meet their demands.

The unions are frustrated by the government’s “unexplained silence” on an agreement signed by eight major unions, that addressed various concerns of healthcare workers.

They believe the government is ignoring the ” dialogue sessions” and the sacrifices made by healthcare workers, who are “essential” for any health reform.

They say the continued silence threatens to derail public health reform workshops and cause a loss of confidence among healthcare professionals, leading to more workers leaving the country.

Karim Belmakdam, a union leader, called the government’s silence “unjustified and dangerous.” He said it’s the first time in history an agreement with unions hasn’t been implemented after six months.

The unions believe their grievances reflect the “serious problems” in the health sector and the dissatisfaction of professionals and argue that government’s inaction on the agreement undermines efforts to reform the health system.
