A total of 6,987 inmates benefited from the non-formal education and teaching program for the 2022-2023 school year in Moroccan prisons, an increase of almost 30% on the previous season and 64% on 2020-2021, according to the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Rehabilitation (DGAPR).

In its activity report for 2023, the DGAPR noted that 1,689 inmates had obtained their school-leaving certificates, compared with 1,297 last year, i.e. a rise of 30%, revealing that 633 inmates had passed the baccalaureate, representing 46.14% of the total number of free candidates.

To support this achievement, an array of educational programs will be launched as part of the partnership project between the DGAPR and the Ministry of National Education, Preschool Learning and Sports, drawn up in a participative and coordinated framework between the two parties, and which will come into force once it has been approved in the next few days.

On the other hand, the report underlines that vocational training, which is of particular interest in the rehabilitation programs adopted in penal institutions, offers real opportunities for beneficiary inmates to acquire professional knowledge and skills capable of facilitating their socio-economic integration after release.

Around 8,113 prisoners have benefited from the various vocational training programs during the 2022-2023 training season, of whom 6,060 passed the final exams, compared with 734 who underwent agricultural training, over 93% of whom passed the exams.
