Road Accidents Claim 17 Lives in Morocco's Urban Areas over Past Week

Seventeen people were killed and 2,894 injured, 92 of them seriously, in the 2,120 road accidents that occurred in urban areas on April 22-28, according to the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN).

These accidents were mainly due to drivers’ inattention, failure to give priority, speeding, pedestrians’ inattention, failure to maintain a safe following distance, changing lanes without signaling, loss of vehicle control, disregard for stop signs, unauthorized lane changes, driving in the left-hand lane, drink-driving, failure to obey red lights, faulty overtaking and driving against traffic, DGSN pointed out in a press release.

With regard to the control and repression of traffic offenses, the security services drew up 42,969 tickets, 7,533 reports submitted to the public prosecutor’s office, while 35,436 transactional fines were collected, according to the same source.

The sums collected from these fines amounted to around 7.6 million dirhams, according to the statement, which also mentioned the impounding of 4,546 vehicles, the seizure of 7,533 documents and the withdrawal of 256 vehicles from circulation.
