Heavy rains devastate Northern Morocco, as flooding exposes infrastructural weakness

Hespress ENSunday 31 March 2024 – 17:53

Heavy rains lashed northern Moroccan cities despite warnings from the weather service. Floods and property damage were widespread, with the rural area of Sahtryine in Tetouan province being especially devastated.

Residents there were trapped in their homes by the overflowing Wadi Al-Sahtryine, forcing civil defense to deploy Zodiac boats for rescues.

This disaster ignited criticism over weak infrastructure and a perceived lack of action on weather alerts.

Civil activists blamed elected officials, accusing them of relying on “patchwork solutions” instead of a comprehensive strategy.

Abdelaziz Jannati, a leading figure in the Moroccan Coalition for Climate and Sustainable Development, expressed gratitude for the rain but lamented the “huge losses” caused by a lack of proactive measures in an interview with Hespress AR.

He decried the absence of a clear city management strategy and practical, sustainable plans.

Mohamed Benaissa, head of the Northern Observatory for Human Rights, pinpointed the root cause as “the problem of reconstruction, which the competent and supervisory authorities have tolerated.” He blames uncontrolled development and inadequate infrastructure for the flooding.
