Morocco’s Ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, affirmed that the “International Women of Courage Award”, presented on March 4 in Washington to Moroccan Rabha El Haymar, illustrates the virtuous dynamic of the reforms initiated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in the field of women’s rights.

In this regard, Amrani noted that the Family Code adopted in 2004 represented a decisive turning point in terms of the protection of women’s rights, indicating that the irrevocable choice made by Morocco under the leadership of His Majesty the King in favor of fundamental rights was also reaffirmed by the 2011 Constitution which promotes equality between men and women in all fields.

“This modernist reform has consolidated the democratic process of society, ensured equality and fairness between men and women, and preserved the ethical values of the family, in accordance with Morocco’s unifying constants”, said the ambassador to Maghreb Arab Presse (MAP) following the award ceremony organized at the White House.

According to Amrani, these reforms have not only contributed to the fight against all forms of discrimination against women but also to the consolidation of their autonomy, and the promotion of their role in Morocco’s political, economic, and social life.

In the same context, the Moroccan diplomat highlighted the role of His Majesty the King who opened the debate for a new reform of the Family Code with achievements in favor of women and the family by calling, during a speech on the occasion of Throne Day of 2022, for an update of national legislation dedicated to the promotion of these rights.

Amrani also indicated that the Kingdom has attributed great importance to women’s rights at the international level by committing to numerous international conventions and cooperation programs aimed at the protection and promotion of women’s legitimate rights.

The “International Women of Courage 2024 Award” was presented to El Haymar by the US First Lady, Jill Biden, and the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, during a ceremony held in the presence of Ambassador Youssef Amrani, representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to Washington and other eminent personalities.
