A Royal Navy Coast Guard intercepted a small boat carrying 33 sub-Saharan individuals attempting irregular migration, about ten kilometers off the coast of the Dkhila port, south of Dakhla, on Wednesday.

The vessel, a wooden boat commonly referred to as a pirogue , set sail from the Mauritanian coast on December 11, 2023, with the intention of reaching the Canary Islands, according to a statement from the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces.

The Royal Navy Coast Guard successfully intercepted the boat, ensuring the safety of all 33 individuals on board. The passengers, who were identified as Sub-Saharan migrants seeking irregular migration, were provided with necessary medical attention on board the naval vessel.

Following the rescue operation, the migrants were transported to the Dkhila port, where they were handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie for standard administrative procedures, as outlined by the authorities.
