By taking an avant-garde initiative in the fight against climate change, Morocco is positioning itself as a precursor of climate action within the Middle East and Africa region, according to Razan al-Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), at COP28 in the United Arab Emirates.

At a side event organized by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, the President of IUCN stressed that “Morocco is recognized as one of the leaders in environmental protection and the fight against climate change in the MENA region and in Africa”.

This stems from his efforts and his total commitment to the decarbonization of his national economy.

Al-Mubarak said that “the international community now recognizes that any action on climate change must include populations, civil society and businesses to be effective”. Morocco adopts an inclusive and sustainable approach to the economy, respecting its environmental commitments and promoting openness to civil society.

She encouraged the countries of the region and Africa to take Morocco as an example, highlighting her inspiring vision, especially as a high-level Champion at COP22 in Marrakech in 2016.

As part of COP28, a meeting at the Moroccan Pavilion was organized in partnership with the General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco (CGEM) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The theme “the review of Africa’s climate action assessment: successes and opportunities” was discussed, with Razan al-Mubarak stressing the importance of the involvement of non-state actors to succeed in the transition, whether in the field of energy or food.

The IUCN President called for regional recognition of Morocco’s efforts and praised the Moroccan government for its concrete adoption of the climate action agenda. She pointed out that Morocco is one of the few countries to have achieved the goal of limiting the temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius, according to the nationally determined contributions (NDC) submitted in 2016.

Al-Mubarak concluded by expressing its confidence that, although “climate change is already present, the world is taking measures to curb the factors responsible for this phenomenon”.
