Morocco’s expertise in the proactive management of meteorological and climate risks took center stage on Saturday during the COP28 activities in Dubai.

National meteorological services play a crucial role in proactively managing weather and climate risks, stated Nizar Baraka, the Minister of Equipment and Water, during the opening of a side-event titled “Early Warning for All: The Role of National Meteorological Services and Coordination for Effective and Sustainable Implementation.”

Minister Baraka highlighted the establishment of a widely recognized meteorological alert system embraced by citizens, the media, and all stakeholders. He emphasized that early forecasting of risks ensures efficient mobilization of resources, optimal preparedness, and effective management of hazardous weather situations.

The minister underscored the significant role of the General Directorate of Meteorology in preserving lives, property, and citizen well-being. The Directorate works to prepare Morocco to mitigate the impact of natural risks linked to weather and climate conditions.

Early warning systems also play a crucial role in reducing community vulnerability and enhancing resilience to hazards. They provide pertinent and timely information to individuals, communities, and authorities, enabling them to take appropriate measures before, during, and after a catastrophe, he said.

The side-event, moderated by the Director-General of the National Meteorology, Abdelfattah Sahibi, saw the participation of prominent Moroccan and African personalities and experts, along with high-level representatives from the World Meteorological Organization and the Islamic Development Bank.
